AEO fundamentals
How to get products into Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google AI Overviews draw on your Merchant feed and Product schema. Here is how to make them agree so Google names your products.

Google now answers many product searches with an AI Overview or in AI Mode, summarising options above the classic blue links. For a store this is both a risk and an opening: the shopper may never scroll to the old results, but the products Google names in that summary get outsized attention. Being one of them comes down to data Google can trust.
Google already knows your products, if you let it
Unlike a pure chat assistant, Google has Merchant Center and the Shopping graph. The single biggest lever is a complete, accurate product feed: correct titles, real GTINs, price, availability and images. AI Overviews draw on that same structured product understanding, so a clean feed is doing double duty.
On the page itself, valid Product structured data confirms and reinforces what the feed says. When the feed, the page and the visible content all agree, Google has no reason to doubt you.
What to get right
- A complete Merchant feed: titles, GTIN, brand, price, availability, images.
- One valid Product JSON-LD block on the page that matches the feed.
- Reviews and ratings, which Google surfaces prominently in product summaries.
- No contradictions between feed, schema and the visible page.
- Google's crawlers, including the AI ones, allowed in robots.
Consistency is the whole game
Most stores lose here not because a field is missing but because three sources disagree: the feed says one price, the page schema says another, the theme prints a third. Google resolves that doubt by trusting someone else. Consolidate to one source of truth and keep it in sync.

Common questions
Is AEO for Google different from classic SEO?
They overlap but are not the same. Classic SEO earns the blue links, while AI Overviews lean on structured product data and your Merchant feed. Clean feeds and matching Product schema are what get you named in the AI summary.
Why is consistency between feed and page so important?
When the feed, the page schema and the visible content disagree on price or availability, Google resolves the doubt by trusting a source it finds more reliable, often a competitor. One source of truth removes that doubt.
