AEO fundamentals
AEO vs SEO: what actually changes when AI answers the query
SEO optimizes to rank on a page of links. AEO optimizes to be the single answer an assistant speaks. Here is what carries over, what AEO adds, and the mindset shift.

SEO and AEO sound like the same job with a new label. They are not. They optimize for two different moments: one for a page of results a person scans, one for a single answer a machine speaks. Here is what actually changes, and what stays the same.
The core difference
SEO optimizes for a ranking. You want to be near the top of a results page, because the human doing the searching will scan a few links and click one. There is a second page, a third, a long tail of chances.
AEO optimizes to be the answer. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best option, they often get one recommendation, not ten links. Either your product is in that answer or it is invisible. There is no page two to fall back to.
What carries over from SEO
AEO is not a teardown of SEO. The hygiene still counts:
- Fast, crawlable pages.
- Clean, valid markup.
- Clear titles and descriptions that match real questions.
- Genuine, useful content rather than keyword filler.
If your SEO is a mess, your AEO will be too. Good SEO is the starting line, not the finish.
What AEO adds
AEO cares about things classic SEO treated as optional:
- Machine-readable facts. Price, brand, GTIN and availability in structured data, not just visible on the page. Most product pages that AI assistants cite carry structured data; pages without it get read fragmentarily or skipped. (Which fields matter.)
- Answer-shaped writing. A direct answer up top that a model can lift cleanly, with the detail below it.
- Consistency a model can trust. Your data across the page, your feed and your other pages should agree. Contradictions make an assistant back off.
- Access for the right crawlers. Being cited depends on letting the retrieval crawlers read you, which is a different setting from the training crawlers.
The mindset shift
SEO asks "how do I rank for this query?". AEO asks "if an assistant answered this question out loud, would it name us, and could it read enough to be sure?". You are no longer competing for a click. You are competing to be the sentence.
The good news: the work overlaps enough that you are not starting over. Clean data and clear answers help both. Start with the complete guide to AEO, then check your store for the gaps: run a free audit.
Common questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. It sits on top of it. Fast, clean, crawlable pages still matter; AEO adds machine-readable data and answer-shaped content so assistants can quote you.
If I rank well on Google, am I already good at AEO?
Partly. Good rankings mean your basics are sound, but AEO also needs valid product structured data, identifiers and consistency, which ranking never strictly required.
